New Labs & Close-outs

The Office of Facilities and Safety understands the challenges of moving in and out of a laboratory space. It requires planning and communication between different groups to ensure it is done safely and efficiently.

We have compiled resources and created short surveys to learn more about potential hazards and other research specific needs of your laboratory to aid in the setup, move, or closeout of your space.

New Laboratory Guidance

The Safety Office can provide guidance on safely and efficiently configuring a new laboratory space and its safety program, if provided with basic information on the new research.

New PIs can complete the Research Materials and Operations Survey so we can understand their research needs, help us determine an optimal lab setup, and direct PIs promptly to campus environment, health and safety (EHS) resources.

New Laboratory Resources

Laboratory Set-up Requirements - Division of Research Safety (DRS) library resource to assist you with evaluating spaces to determine if they meet the requirements for handling the materials you intend to use
Principal Investigator Safety Orientation - Online DRS Training
Safety Orientation Checklist - Checklist that will assist you with creating and maintaining your group's safety program.
Training Checklist - Checklist to assist you with onboarding and documenting training of new personnel.

Lab Renovation/Construction Project Scoping Toolkit (new)

For lab renovation or construction projects, PIs can provide information regarding their upcoming equipment's facility needs as well as their existing or proposed chemical inventory using the Lab Scoping Toolkit (Excel file).  This toolkit captures each equipment's utility requirements (power, water, compressed air, and so on) as well as the lab's material and process hazards–critical information that needs to be shared with lab designers, Facilities and Service (F&S), DRS, and others involved in laboratory design and construction to deliver a lab that is appropriate for the intended research.

Lab Move and Close-out Support

Use our checklist to safely and efficiently prepare for a move or to close-out your laboratory. If you would like additional assistance you can complete our survey and we can offer guidance and resources in conjunction with DRS.
